At Chicago Canine Rescue, we are dedicated to giving every dog a chance at a bright future. However, three incredible dogs — Rocky, Xena, and Zeus — have been with us for a combined total of 2,390 days, waiting for their forever homes. They have touched our hearts deeply, and now, we need your help to make their dreams of a loving home a reality.

Meet Rocky, Xena, and Zeus:

Rocky is a goofy wannabe "lap dog" who has been patiently waiting for someone who wants this bachelor to call their own. Despite his long stay, he remains hopeful and ready to bring joy to a new family! We are SUPER excited to share that he landed in a foster home just a few days ago and is on the way to his brighter future!

Xena is a spirited and affectionate soul with a heart as big as her personality! Her vibrant energy and unwavering loyalty make her a wonderful addition to any home.

Zeus is a gentle giant who has spent his time at the shelter getting snuggles with his favorite volunteers. His playful demeanor and affectionate nature are sure to bring joy and love to his future home!

How You Can Help:

Our goal is to raise $50,000 for life-enhancing care for ALL of our long stay dogs, both current and future - Rocky, Xena, and Zeus included! Your donations will go directly towards necessary medical care; fun day trips; training sessions; visiting Sniff Spots; exciting outings to Bosley's Backyard; enrichment toys and activities; individual housing upgrades (look what we did for Zeus here!); special foods; and delicious treats -- all designed to make our long-stay dogs’ shelter days brighter. Your support will ensure that these dogs experience the best life possible in our care while also preparing them for life outside of the shelter.

In addition to supporting the dogs in the shelter, your donations will help equip our foster homes with everything they need to prepare our long-stay dogs for their forever homes. These dogs will require professional training sessions to fine-tune their house-training skills (after all, they’ve been in the shelter for quite a while!), neighborhood walks, skills for being left alone, and creative, comfortable confinement solutions to help them relax when unsupervised or in need of a break. Addressing these needs are essential to ensure that dogs who have spent so long in a shelter environment have the best chance of securing a brighter future in an adoptive home! You may not be able to foster, but your donation will help us arrange the perfect foster home and tools for someone else to do so!

Addressing The Bigger Issue:

While we strive to give each dog the care and love they need, the reality is that their prolonged stay in our shelter highlights a larger issue within the animal welfare crisis. When we pull dogs from open intake facilities like CACC, we save lives, but with adoption rates remaining low across the country, many of these dogs end up spending extended periods at CCR. We don’t euthanize for space...but that means these dogs may wait months or even years for a home.

This situation emphasizes the urgent need for broader community involvement. We need your help to advocate for the dogs who live in the shelter, whether by fostering, donating, participating in out-of-shelter activities, or simply spreading the word. Supporting the Brighter Futures Campaign is one way to increase visibility and share their stories, help us find them loving homes and alleviate the strain on our shelter. Over the course of this campaign, we will be sharing not only our top three longest in-shelter residents, but also our dogs who have been with us for over 100 and even 75 days each. You may be familiar with Prune, Pippin, Max, and Sly as well - and we will be highlighting their stories to do our best to get these dogs out of the shelter and into a home where they belong.
